A bike tour through the European Quarter – modernity sweeps through this historic area…<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Frankfurt and its surrounding area are ideal for exploring by pedal! Over the past 12 years the European Quarter, the former site of a massive railway freight yard, has been transformed into a modern living and working area, where more than 10,000 people now live. Not to be forgotten, this also includes the exhibition center with its 11 huge halls! We begin our bike tour at the Festhalle, the first exhibition hall ever built in Frankfurt in 1909.<\/p>\n

Frankfurt boomed at the beginning of the 20th century, the population exploded and by 1914 around 350,000 people already lived here. Frankfurt’s first airport was built on today’s Rebstock site and the rapid change from trading to industrial city was felt everywhere.<\/p>\n

In 1909, the first international aviation exhibition (ILA) was held and it drew around 1.5 million spectators. This took place on the site of today’s exhibition center all the way up to the old Rebstock Airport. This was the scene for flight acrobatics, sightseeing flights, airship tours and it was a tourist magnet for balloon flights. The street names of the new Rebstock Park area (which we will visit) are dedicated to the important flight pioneers involved and their stories. The tour goes back through the European Quarter and ends in the Gallus Quarter.<\/p>\n
